Adventures of the Nina Ricci Girl: Ponette goes to the theater

A hush rippled through the crowd as the orchestra leader took his position. O fortuna. The ultimate call to battle. Richard III, driven, conniving and cowardly. At least according to Shakespeare. Orlando sat down next to his grandmother as the crowd settled into silence. Flames dropped from above; caught by invisable hands. The flickering light moved; a figure was revealed, poised in the middle of the aisle. He raised his head and spoke: Now is the winter of our discontent.

The audience shouted their approval, wildly cheering and clapping their hands. A few minutes passed till once again silence made its presence felt. The Duke of Gloucester, soon to be Richard III, continued: Made glorious summer by this sun of York; and all the clouds that lour’d upon our house in the deep bosom of the ocean buried.

If Italian espresso could speak, he fancied it would sound like the actor's voice; deep and smooth.  The soliloquy promised a thrilling evening. Orlando let his eyes wander over the faces held in the flickering light. Watching faces when they thought they were not being watched, when masks were dropped was something he enjoyed. That was all too seldom, especially in his line of work. One reason more to love the theatre. While the actors had symbolic masks on, the audience did not.

Light danced across a cheek. It was the girl. The girl from last night. A thin black ribbon encircled pale skin. Something pierced his heart and his hands started to sweat.

The torchbearers moved away, her face receded into darkness. Ponette whispered into Fred's ear, "When is this over? I need a smoke." "In less time than a trans Atlantic flight."

Orlando watched her lips move. He felt on the threshold to something irreversible. Something he was not able to control, something completely out of his hands. Something he could not avoid even if he wanted to. You kick your horse into a gallop, momentum, no force in the world can stop it.
